Why Convert JPG to PNG?

The most common reason is compatibility: some platforms, upload forms, and design tools simply require PNG. Logo submissions, Slack and Discord emoji, game and app assets, printable templates, and documentation systems often reject JPG and only accept PNG. Converting JPG to PNG gets your image through whatever gate is turning it away, in a couple of seconds and without installing anything.

The second reason is editing. JPG is a lossy format, which means every time you open it, change it, and save it again, the file is re-compressed and a little more detail is thrown away. PNG is lossless — once you convert JPG to PNG, you can crop, annotate, and re-save as many times as you like without that generational quality loss piling up. For screenshots, diagrams, and images with text or sharp edges, PNG keeps lines crisp where JPG would leave fuzzy compression artifacts.

Let's be honest about what converting JPG to PNG does not do, because most converters won't tell you. It will not magically sharpen a blurry photo or recover detail your JPG already lost — that information is gone for good. And the PNG will usually be larger than the JPG, often several times larger, because lossless compression can't shrink a photo as aggressively. JPG to PNG is the right move when you need a lossless, widely accepted, edit-friendly file — not when you're trying to make a file smaller.

JPG vs PNG: What's the Difference?

JPG is a lossy, heavily compressed format with no transparency — small files, ideal for photos. PNG is a lossless format that supports transparency — larger files, ideal for graphics, screenshots, text, and anything you'll edit or need exactly pixel-for-pixel.

JPG (also written .jpeg) was designed for photographs. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which is why a photo saved as JPG can be a fraction of the size of the same image as PNG. The trade-off is that the discarded detail is permanent, and re-saving repeatedly compounds the damage. JPG also can't store a transparent background.

PNG was designed for the web and for graphics. It compresses without throwing anything away, so a PNG is an exact, pixel-perfect copy that you can edit and re-save endlessly. PNG also supports an alpha channel for transparency. When you convert JPG to PNG, you're moving from a small-but-lossy photo format to a larger-but-lossless graphics format — a worthwhile swap whenever fidelity, editability, or PNG-only compatibility matters more than file size.

How to Convert JPG to PNG in 3 Steps

There's nothing to install and no account to create. The whole process runs locally in your browser, so even large batches convert instantly with no upload wait.

1

Add your JPG files

Drag your .jpg or .jpeg images onto the box above, or click to choose them. Drop a whole folder if you want — there's no limit on how many you add.

2

Convert to PNG

Press Convert to PNG. Each image is re-encoded losslessly to PNG right on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so it finishes in seconds even for dozens of files.

3

Download your PNGs

Save each PNG individually, or grab everything at once as a single ZIP. Your originals stay untouched on your device.

Pro tip: If you actually need a smaller file rather than a lossless one, converting the other direction is what you want — try our PNG to JPG tool.

Lossless, Private, and Unlimited

Every conversion here is lossless: the PNG is a pixel-perfect copy of your JPG, with no extra compression applied. That makes it safe to use as a clean master you can edit and re-save without quality degrading over time.

Because the whole thing runs in your browser, there's no file-size cap, no daily conversion limit, no queue, and no waiting for an upload to finish. Convert one image or a hundred, as often as you like, free.

Converting JPG to PNG is ideal for:

  • Logos, icons, and assets for platforms that require PNG
  • Screenshots and images with text or sharp lines
  • Files you'll edit and re-save repeatedly
  • Lossless archival master copies
  • Slack / Discord emoji and game assets

Convert JPG to PNG on Windows, Mac, iPhone & Android

The same browser tool works on every device and operating system — no app to download. Here's how it fits each platform:

§ 01

Windows & Mac

You can convert JPG to PNG with the built-in Photos, Paint, or Preview apps via 'Save As' / 'Export', but this tool batch-converts many files at once and packages them in a ZIP — far faster than re-saving one by one.

§ 02

iPhone & Android

Phones don't offer a simple JPG-to-PNG export, which makes a browser tool the easiest route. Open this page in Safari or Chrome, pick your photos, convert, and save — no app install, no account.

§ 03

In bulk

Drag in an entire folder of JPGs and convert them all in one pass. Every PNG is bundled into a single ZIP download, so there's nothing to click through one at a time.

Your Images Never Leave Your Device

Unlike most JPG to PNG converters, this tool does all the work locally using your browser's own image engine. Your files are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and never seen by anyone but you.

That matters when you're converting ID scans, contracts, private photos, or anything confidential. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the converter still works — proof that nothing is being sent anywhere.

§ 01

No upload

Conversion happens in your browser. Files stay on your device from start to finish.

§ 02

No account

No sign-up, no email, no login wall. Open the page and convert.

§ 03

No limits, no ads

Unlimited conversions with no daily cap, no queue, and no ad clutter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting JPG to PNG give me a transparent background?
No. This is the most common misunderstanding. Converting JPG to PNG only changes the file format — the background stays exactly as it was. JPG can't store transparency, so there's nothing transparent to carry over. To get a transparent background you need a separate background-removal step; converting to PNG simply gives you a format that is capable of holding transparency once you remove it.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve or restore image quality?
No. JPG already discarded detail when it was first saved, and converting to PNG cannot bring that detail back — a blurry or compressed JPG stays exactly as blurry once it's a PNG. What you gain is that the PNG is lossless from that point on, so further edits and re-saves won't degrade it any more.
Why is my PNG larger than the original JPG?
That's normal and expected. PNG uses lossless compression, so it can't shrink a photo as aggressively as JPG's lossy compression. A PNG is often several times larger than the same image as a JPG. If a smaller file is your goal rather than a lossless one, you probably want PNG to JPG instead.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your JPGs are never sent to a server, never stored, and never seen by anyone else. You can confirm this by going offline after the page loads — the converter still works.
Can I convert many JPGs to PNG at once and download them together?
Yes. Add as many JPG files as you like — there's no cap — convert them all in one pass, and download every PNG bundled into a single ZIP. You can also save individual files if you only need a few.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on iPhone or Android?
Yes. Just open this page in your phone's browser (Safari or Chrome), pick your photos, tap Convert to PNG, and save the results. There's no app to install and no account to create.
PNG or JPG — which should I use?
Use PNG for graphics, logos, screenshots, text, line art, anything needing transparency, and any file you'll edit repeatedly. Use JPG for photographs and anywhere small file size matters most. Convert JPG to PNG when a platform requires PNG or when you need a lossless, edit-friendly copy.
Is there a file size or quantity limit?
No. Because everything is processed locally, there's no file-size cap and no limit on how many images you convert. There are no daily limits, queues, or paywalls either.
Do I need to install software or sign up?
No. This is a free browser tool — no download, no extension, no registration, and no email required. Open the page and start converting JPG to PNG immediately.
Will the converted PNG look any different from my JPG?
No. The conversion is lossless, so the PNG is a pixel-for-pixel copy of your JPG — it looks identical. The only differences are the file format and, usually, a larger file size.
